Diet and Dominating Cancer

Okay, it's been well over a year since we have seen that pesky MM show up on a blood test or bone marrow biopsy.  We are still many years from proclaiming a cure, but we aren't going to stop trying to kick it. Every day is an opportunity to remind the disease who is boss.

When I was diagnosed, I wanted to look at holistic options for treating my disease. Well, consumed with two little tots, a career, and pressed for time to do research, I opted for the modern approach to taking on cancer with a heck of a lot of stuff that's not good for human consumption, in hopes the bad cells all get elbow dropped to oblivion, and the harm to the good cells is very limited with no lasting affects (i.e. second cancer).

Now, I have some time to breathe, enjoy my family, grow my business (Torrent Consulting)...AND...return to this idea of taking a holistic approach to dominating cancer. Please leave a comment on what you have tried!!!

I have had several dietary related convictions over the years, one is that I want to be a raw vegan foodist. 8 years ago I gave up meat, and I proved to myself I can make some pretty big lasting changes in my diet. Now as a cancer patient, I am thinking of what other dietary changes I should make to give me the best chances of making that game winning kick. One is adding meat back into my diet.

First, I saw a holist doctor last week in West Bloomfield. The guy doesn't take any new patients, but he does LOVE Michigan football....so we lucked in with getting an appointment. He took what seemed to be half my blood from my body and half a pound of hair from my head for analysis purposes. We meet in a couple of weeks to see what he thinks.

In the meantime, I am toying with the idea of cutting out carbs from my diet....and I have already started to experiment. I am perplexed with how a vegetarian can do this...given we are more like carb-etarians in the Brabbs' household. Sugars have been linked as the fuel source for cancer. Not sure how true that is, but I am buying the logic, or at least going to factor it into the approach for my new diet aimed to dominate cancer.

If you or someone you know has said 'No to Carbs'....tell me how they did this without feeling sluggish all day long (me yesterday). By the way, I don't drink coffee or soda....although my tea has been nice!

The other thing I started taking is essential oils...kudos to Cassie on this one. Specifically frankincense. I figured if it was a good enough gift for the King of Kings, Jesus; maybe it could me a magical potion for dominating my Myeloma. Who knows....but I am giving it a shot. I am dominating five drips of this every night in a veggie capsule.

I would love to learn how other people are taking on cancer with their diet. Are you juicing? Are you drinking wheat grass? Are you making mud pies?????

Keep dominating everyone!

Phil

Phil!

A friend of mine in the UK was diagnosed with breast cancer in January. She decided to fight it with her diet and turned to a woman named Kris Carr Kris has basically "cured" herself of cancer through her diet alone and has been in remission for about 10 years. Kind of incredible.

My friend in the UK has been doing it since January and has seen a noticeable difference in the size of her tumor and feels incredible!

I have suffered with chronic migraines for years as well as infertility so my friend recommended Kris. Over the past 10 weeks I've been juicing every morning and following Kris's alkaline diet as much as I can although it can be a challenge!

I would suggest taking a look at her site and philosophy and see if it might be something that would be right for you.

Keep dominating!!

I read anti-cancer a few years ago, and really loved the book. It details how our diets can contribute to cancer and talked about the role of sugar in feeding cancer cells.

I would definitely recommend it! :)

Phil,

In my limited research on this topic, I came across a 2011 documentary called Forks Over Knives, which supports the notion that the healthiest diet is a "whole food plant-based" diet. The film understandably spends a bunch of time addressing issues of heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes, but also provides a lot of discussion on the relationship between cancer and diet. I'd highly recommend it. At a minimum, it's entertaining and may help direct some of your own research.

You can find out more at www.forksoverknives.com. I have a DVD copy of the film, which I can drop off if you do want to watch it. Just text me or I'll probably see you this weekend.

Peace,
Aaron

I was diagnosed with MM in January of 2010. I have tried to concentrate on buying mostly organic foods and locally sourced food products. I have been on a very low carb diet in the past (before MM) and I felt pretty awful, so I don't think I'll be trying that anytime soon. Organic meat is still in my diet, but in small amounts.

Toxins in the environment have also been on my list of things to avoid, but that is harder to control. 100% pure beeswax candles and organic cleaning supplies are now a part of my life. Did you know that candles can claim to be beeswax with only 51% beeswax? We have an orthodox convent nearby and they produce 100% pure beeswax candles and they are wonderful. They purify the air and give off a soft honey scent.

I just have MGUS. I have been a vegeatarian for 19 years. I am not sure that you should cut out carbs. My cousin's daughter is Raw foods only and she is having terrible digestive problems. One sugggestion that I have is to make sure that you are drinking enough water. I know that is recommended for multiple myeloma. I would say please talk to your onc before doing the carb eradiaction.

So interesting to read your post Phil, as I was the girl that ate/drank the rainbow of dark colored veggies and fruits, raised on wholewheat bread, very little sugar, no soda, no alcohol, and basically vegetarian.... BEFORE MYELOMA!!! But I was on death's doorstep when I was diagnosed NewYearsEve 2009! And so horribly anemic they wanted to immediately hospitalize me and give me platelets and blood etc. So NOW, I eat a little meat each week (even tho I am an animal lover and dislike eating meat); I eat egg(whites) and a bit of dairy like yogurt, and the veggie-fruit rainbow daily... and according to all my labwork... I'm in the best health I've been in for years! So my take on this... BALANCE! And a little bit of everything that's healthy!

Great comments every one! I think the collective word I am hearing is eat healthy balanced diet. I am going to reintroduce meat, and lower my carb in take. It's probably no different than what we should all be doing anyways! Obviously, I am going to monitor my health to make sure I am feeling good. Thanks for all the feedback!!! -Phil

Hey Phil ! Been a long time since I have caught up with your blog. I see an acupuncture doc and he recommended and herbal blend which I just started taking. Also he suggested lots of greens and staying away from tropical fruits like banana, mango etc. he says they produce "damp" heat. There is a store in my town that now is juicing and created the #bradstrong juice. Kale, Spinach, Pear, Apple, Ginger and Avocado.

As far as the carbs go - I would not eliminate. As long as you stay away from processed foods, sugars especially, and stay organic I think that is the way to go.

Keep doMMinating!
